So! Endlich ist es soweit! Der Weimarer Adventskalender ist in der freien Wildbahn angekommen und kann von Euch schwupp-di-wupps weggekauft werden. Prinzip ist das gleiche wie letztes Jahr: Die Seiten sind vorn verschlossen und müssen jeden Tag aufgeschnitten werden, um das Bild freizulegen. Beteiligt sind 24 Illustrationsstudenten und -absolventen der Bauhaus-Uni hier in Weimar. Noch ein paar Kaufargumente: 2farbiger Offset, viel Liebe drin, mal was fein anderes.

Zu kaufen gibt's ihn hier in Weimar: im Bauhaus.Shop oder in der Eckermann-Buchhandlung.

Great news with many feathers and very big eyes! Some weeks ago Shivani from »My Owl Barn« asked me if I wanted to participate in the Owl Lover 2012 calendar project. I've finally seen »Pina« at the cinema. Best. 3D-movie. ever. And now my favourite movie of the year. So many gorgeous pictures, a great insight into the work of Pina Bausch and intense music. I listened to the score the whole week. Especially this piece. Dance, dance into the weekend!

Ich habe endlich Wim Wenders »Pina« in 3D gesehen. Sooooo gut. Bester 3D-Film bisher und mein momentaner Lieblingsfilm dieses Jahres. I've been busy these last months. So I'm really ready to abandon my desk and leave for vacation, but before I do this, I want to show you another book I did illustrations for. It came out this month too and I like it very much. It's »Bulle und Pelle«, published by Gabriel.
It's about Bulle, a little boy, whose rabbit dies and Bulle wonders where he has gone now that he is dead. And so he goes on a little journey during which he meets different people to get an answer. It's a really touching story and I'm happy with the outcome. I especially like the cover, since it turned out exactly like the inner picture I had in mind when I read the manuscript. As a kid I was a well-known guest at our local library. At my high time I read about 10 books a week and I didn't need to show my library card, since they knew my name anyway. One of the authors I read was Klaus Kordon, so I was stunned when Beltz asked me to illustrate a book by him. Me? Just moments ago I've been 9 and now I switched sides. Strange in a good way! Resurfacing. Not only all the colours and smells and bird's songs arise again, but also me. I brought a mean virus flu back from Bologna, so I missed the first days of bloom and stayed in bed with a fever (that's why Sun was missing on Sunday). Bologna treasures

As I promised here are my personal gems that I found at the bookfair in Bologna. Be prepared for a rather long post!

First is an awesome pop-up-book by the publisher Helium Editions, that became instantly one of my favourite publishing companies when I drooled over nearly every book at their fairstand.

»Dans la forêt du paresseux« is published by Helium Editions and illustrated by Anouck Boisrobert. She also illustrated Popville, where a town grows throughout the book.
In »Dans la forêt du paresseux« a rainforest is cleared, but a gardener's seeds bring it back.

Beautiful, isn't it? And here is a video, so you can better see how awesome it's constructed. With every turn of a page your mouth drops even more.

»Adieu Chaussette« by Benjamin Chaud (if you find a page of him, please tell me!).
As much as I understand the French text, the story seems to be about a boy and his rabbit (with oh so cute ears!), whom he abandones in the woods, because a rabbit is just too boring as a pet, but soon he regrets it.

I like how Benjamin Chaud draws the forest and his characters are just too cute, especially this chubby rabbit.

Helium book No.3 (as I said, I became a fan ;)
»Á quoi penses-tu?« by Laurent Moreau.

I like her style and I was thrilled by the use of paper flaps in the book. By turning them you can see what every person is thinking. One person thought of nothing, so there was just the blank space when you turned the flap. Great idea! See:

A gorgeous colouring book with a beautiful use of blue and black.

Collections of things popped up in the blogosphere a while ago, but more and more it seems to become a topic in children's book too. I found many books that were about certain collections and then had beautiful double spreads showing all the things side by side. One of them is »Sånt som er« by Svein Nyhus and published by Gyldendal.

Eli is collecting things and then puts them into categories, that are shown on the right side (like wet, old, hard etc.)

Another book, that I liked (and bought right away), has been »Miasteczko Mamoko« which has been made by the Czech designer duo Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy. They founded a studio called »Hipopotamstudio« and already did some great books.

It has this quirky line style, that so reminds me of my Eastern European children's books that I had as a child. And since I like busy picture books anyway, it got high on my list. You can follow the characters throughout the pages and one can search for all the apples, that the turtle has lost because of a hole in her bag which she discovers at the first page.

By the way, is there an English word for the German »Wimmelbuch«? Does anyone know?

And last but not least there is »Crazy Pic-Nic«, published by »Les apprentis rêveurs« and illustrated by Chamo.

The crazy picnic consists of a leporello that shows a picnic. The guests (e.g. a camel drinking lemonade through a straw and other cool characters) are stickers that the kid can apply to the scene.

Bologna 2011

I'm back from Bologna and it were some great few days! Although Sun kept us waiting till Tuesday, the downpour on Monday didn't matter, because of us being at the bookfair anyway. I've seen sooo many gorgeous and fun books (especially the French ones), beautifully designed to the last detail. I felt so inspired! Beside googling over all these beauties (I will do a post soon about my »discoveries«), we ate delicious Italian food (like these superjummy handmade popsicles above). Mine has been a strawberry one dipped into white chocolate at the top *mmh*. We did some shopping, saw Camilla Engman's and Ana Ventura's exhibition (the pic with the tea cup is from that exhibition), shared some fun talks, enjoyed coffee (of course) and Sun on our faces. I love Bologna! It's definitely my favourite book fair during the year.

In case you wonder: No, it's not sunday, I'm sorry. But Sun discovered the flickr group »What I wore today« and HAD to participate. I tried to convince Sun that wearing not as much could be proven rather boring for this group, but that was quite futile. Well, stubborn sun got its way…again *sigh*. Oh, and in case you wonder again: After yesterday's exertion Supersun's cape got dirty (a weary cloud vomitted upon it) and had to be cleaned. Now it's drying. That's why Sun is without cape and its civilian self again.

At least here in Weimar! Sun kicked some clouds' butts today and gave Weimar a blue-sky-sunday. Let's see if those dark forces will ever show up in town again. Sun is pondering an assistant, but don't know who would look good in tights. Moon already declined.

Hello 2011!! The new year received a loud, colourful and sparkling Welcome last night. For 2011 I wish us exactly that: Loud, colourful and sparkling days en masse!
I already had a first this year: I made a teensy-weensy video.
And yes, it's supposed to be blurry. If you don't feel that artsy fartsiness, just imagine you are me. Fireworks looks exactly like this when I don't wear my glasses ;)

I did this illustration last year and since then it made a little journey. First it has been a draft for last year's advent calendar, but didn't make it to the final front. Instead I posted it here last christmas and now inkognito sells it on cards (unfortunately with a type they set without me knowing it and of which I'm not really fond of). But nevertheless, I'm happy about its journey and the final outcome. One can buy normal postcards at inkognito or folded greeting cards at SOS Kinderdörfer.

A quick snowflake I made, while I should do something else. I would like to sleep under a snow blanket too, like all the bushes, fences, roofs and trees do. I imagine it warm and calm and very peaceful. I could collect my thoughts.

Weimar is back in its winter wonderland dress. Rosy-cheeked people. Christmas markets. Strolls in the park and a chai tea afterwards. So beautiful.

After seeing this I even more want an ipad. Oliver Jeffers' new children book app looks so nice.

*tadaaa* Our advent calendar is back, freshly printed as a 2-color-offset and made by 16 illustrators from Weimar. 24 days and 24 well hidden illustrations. So it's a nice surprise when one has to pick up a scissor every day to cut open the folded page and then to see what picture is inside.

When I saw this leaf on the pavement, my mind needed some seconds till it fully comprehended how perfectly coloured the leaf was. So I had to go back and pick it up, couldn't leave it there. I did some patterns instead and it works perfectly. If I would have some »Mr. Leaf of the Year« Competition going one, this leaf would probably win.
